What is Aloe Vera?
The Aloe Vera plant is a member of the lily family. There are 300 spices which are related to onions, garlic and asparagus. It is a xerophyte preferring 'arid' conditions. Also known as Agaves, aloes vary in size from dwarf species only a few centimetres in diameter, such as the popular house plant aloe variegate, to species as large as a small tree. In their natural habitat most aloes flower during the winter. Aloe plants tend to have sword-shaped spiny leaves arranged in a rosette. As well as the four medicinal plants listed below they also contain Sisalina whose fibres are used to make ropes and Americana from which Mexicans produce pulque and tequila.
Medicinal Species
- Aloe Barbadensis Miller
- Aloe Ferox Miller
- Aloe Perry Baker
- Aloe Arboescens
Plant Anatomy
The plant is mature by four years with a life span of about 12 years. The outer leaves are removed and the gel extracted from them. Each leaf is approximately 2 feet long and 4 inches wide. They reproduce by forming a flowering stem which produces seeds but also asexually by sending out suckers/pulps.
